Shkayla band members take part in International Jazz Day

Two members of Shkayla are ‘playing away’ on 30th April, which UNESCO has designated as International Jazz Day.

IJD 2016 is being celebrated in 195 countries all over the world. In the UK this includes a high calibre event in Leamington Spa, where Interplay, the jazz group run by Shkayla’s bassist Adrian Litvinoff, is hosting international guitar star John Etheridge for an exciting one-off musical encounter. This takes place at 8.00pm in The Restaurant In The Park, Jephson Gardens, Leamington Spa CV32 4AA.

A Nod to Soft Machine

In addition to Interplay’s repertoire of tunes by the leader, jazz favourites and global grooves, there will be solo spots for John Etheridge, whose prowess as an unaccompanied guitarist is just one of his superb performance styles. Excitingly John will also call a couple of tunes by legendary progressive jazz-rock band Soft Machine. This is because both Alan Wakeman, Interplay’s saxophonist, and Etheridge both played in Soft Machine in the 1970s, and indeed John still runs the ‘Soft Machine Legacy’ Band.

Also on the bill is Si Hayden, whose virtuosity is well known to Shkayla fans. Si will be delivering a solo set as well as joining Interplay and John Etheridge later in the programme.

Jazz on Film

An unusual event takes place at 5.30pm on the afternoon of the concert, when Dr. Nicolas Pillai of Birmingham City University will give an illustrated talk about Jazz on Film. The talk, which is free to attend, is entitled ‘Before “Whiplash”: Understanding Jazz Film’. Like the concert, the talk takes place in Jephson Gardens, this time in the Studio in the Glasshouse.

Concert tickets are available online from the Leamington Town Hall Box Office or on 01926 334418.

Pre-booking for the Film talk is not required.
